Henohenomoheji x Bousai Zukin
Henohenomoheji is a face made of hirigana characters. When children are taught to write this face is typically drawn to help familiarize the student with the proper stroke order. Westerners refer to the face sometimes as “hirigana man’ for that reason. The characters themselves mean nothing when written out.
A ‘bousai zukin’ translates literally as ‘protective headcloth’ all school children used to be required to bring one to school. On a practical day to day level it functioned as a seat cushion. In cases of emergency it was wrapped around the head in case of quake or fire.
